What Fills You Up?

I saw an interesting clip the other day of a woman talking about Doritos. Yes, the chips. She said something along the lines of, “You eat an entire bag of Doritos because they taste good, not because they’re what your body needs.” That struck a nerve with me.
This Dorito metaphor made me think of people’s career paths and day-to-day jobs. How many of you out there are running the rat race, working your 9 to 5’s because they are making you money and putting food on the table, but not truly satiating your hunger for life?
The money you are making is the bag of Doritos. It feels good to make money. You need to make money just like you need to eat. However, your body will be depleted of necessary vitamins, minerals, and proteins if you live off of Doritos chips. Now, let’s say you can’t just quit eating Doritos cold turkey, that’s understandable. But maybe you need to start eating some chicken at lunchtime– just a piece or two. And maybe at night time you grill yourself a steak and veggies. Okay, now our body is getting a little more balanced, right?
Your career needs to be about finding that healthy metaphorical balance of vitamins and minerals by working on what will make you happy. Hacking your job is all about finding those times throughout the day to eat a little steak and some veggies. Find what you truly love– what lights a fire within you when you think about it– and that is your steak. That is your metaphorical vitamins and minerals that will satiate your hunger for the life you deserve.
Start looking at the down times during the day to work on what you love. You can still work at your Doritos job, but snack on some steak and chicken when you don’t have your hands buried in the bag of Doritos– because remember, it’s the steak, chicken, veggies that fill you up– not the Doritos.
