Make Money While You Sleep

One of my favorite entrepreneurs, authors, and thinkers is a man by the name of Naval Ravikant. Naval has created many great businesses and written books that are life-changing, but one of the most insightful things he offers is his view that “Wealth is oriented toward businesses and assets that you can earn while you sleep.”

A man can make a good living by working as a landscaper. Landscaping is good, honest work no doubt, but why would you go for a hard-working blue collar job that is not making you money around the clock? Investments, products, and creating something that makes you stand out is the goal. That is how you earn money while you sleep, while you take your kids on a vacation, and while you live the life of freedom.

We always go back to the freedom of time in ‘Hack Your Job’ because that is the finite entity that we are all fighting to maintain. Is the man or woman that wakes at 6AM, sits in traffic until 7AM, then lives the mundane existence of someone who has no freedom and limited happiness someone who has the freedom of time? Where is their freedom at all?

This person is likely making a salary and might not necessarily be getting paid well for their actual work. (If you are in this position, I would ask you to break down your hourly worth. If you are a professional earning an annual salary, I would ask you to add up your hourly rate. Are you proud of that?) After you do this, think of the opportunities in the world that can allow you wealth in the sense that Naval described it and ask yourself which path is better?
