Hacking any part of your life, whether it be your job, career, side gig, or even life in general, you can’t expect to achieve this overnight. Everything in life that is worthwhile will take incremental change. Most everyone that tries to quit drinking, or drugs, or pornography fail more times than not because they think they must just give it up immediately and quit cold turkey.
Studies show that if you can cut down from one bottle of wine per night to two glasses per night to 1.5 glasses to 1, and so on, it becomes inevitable that you can quit. You are showing your inner self that you can do it and that you are capable of quitting when you do it slowly and incrementally.
Sure, everyone is wired differently, and some people can go cold turkey and never look back, but the majority of us, myself included, need incremental steps to accomplish something.
This goes in the other direction as well. You don’t go to the gym and see results on the first day, or even the first several weeks, you must be consistent and wait for the delayed results. After I had gained weight and was unhappy with the way I looked and felt, I first began changing my eating habits. I didn’t necessarily change what I ate– I would still eat nachos and some cookies and all the good things– but I would eat six nacho chips instead of polishing off an entire plate. I would eat three bites of a cookie instead of two cookies.
When I started doing this I noticed the small changes, and over the course of a few months, I had lost nearly 20 pounds! Simple changes change your life in profound ways. This will be a recurring theme throughout this book and on this site. Stay tuned.
